Let us on this day salute and thank ophthalmologists for leading the visually impaired from despair to hope, making them independent, productive and proud citizens, let us thank them for their dedicated services to patients and restoring their vision which has helped in making the goal of WHO and individual nations in terms of reducing the percentage of visually impaired people the world over, by eradicating blindness levels. The day honors the contribution and dedication of the doctors in the worst of times.

This day has special significance this year. amid the COVID-19 pandemic, doctors and physicians and especially ophthalmologists all around the world have been recognized for their selfless service and acts.

Working continuous shifts and putting their own health in danger, this day gives a perfect opportunity to salute their work. 8th Aug of each year- Ophthalmologists day is being celebrated for acknowledging the services of doctors and their huge contribution to the eye care advancement the world over.

"International Day of Ophthalmology" which is observed every year on August 8 is the birthday of the world famous ophthalmologist Svyatoslav Fyodorov, the day was chosen to honor Dr Svyatoslav Fyodorov, a renowned Soviet and Russian ophthalmologist who was born on this day in the year 1927.

Dr Fyodorov is considered a pioneer in several branches of eye surgery. He was the first surgeon in the Soviet Union to successfully perform implantation of an artificial lens and the first surgeon in the world to successfully use an innovative surgical technique to detect and cure glaucoma at its early stages. However, he is most famous for developing radial keratotomy, a surgical technique to change the shape of the cornea and correct nearsightedness (myopia), as well as for his overall contribution to refractive surgery.

Healthcare professionals find TwinTech Academy`s Collaborative Change Management in Healthcare webinar Outstanding

 

TwinTech Academy,Chennai in association with Chitkara University conducted a webinar on Collaborative Change Management in Healthcare on the 25th July 2020.

 

The session started with a warm welcome note and the need for Collaborative Change Management in healthcare professional managers by Shri A. Mahalingam, Managing Director of the institution, he thanked the participants for the response and confidence in the institution and wished them for a wonderful session.

 

Introducing the speaker Shri C. Vijaya Kumar , a multi-disciplinary veteran,  Mr. A Mahalingam highlighted his several qualifications, vast experience,  commitment and passion that he brings on board, his accomplishments and his penchant for knowledge sharing.

 

Mr. C Vijaya Kumar , in a power-packed presentation effectively drove home the following points:

·        Excellence

·        In this trying times of pandemic,  there is not any aspect of life that has not been disrupted.

·        Fighting fear has become as much a challenge as fighting the Covid 19.

·        The what,how and why of Collaborative Change Management are to be determined by the individual, the hospital or the organisation and it is not a " one fix for all " solution.

·        In a situation of changing behavior, high expectations of speed, protocol changes and critical need for altered layouts, equipment, resources, newer medical interventions  and counseling methods have made collaborative actions a necessity than an option. 

·        Collaborative Change Management involved a higher level of self awareness,  a willingness to support cha ge and be the change one self.

·        The need is to move from a situation of 'trust deficit' to ' trust surplus' .

·        Collaborative Changes in various areas of knowledge, technological tools deployment and resource utilization and of course Research can ensure managing the paradigm shift that is evident in many industries, most importantly healthcare.

·        The digital world is transforming the delivery system and models in healthcare industry. 

·        Hospitals and organisations have to necessarily raise the bar in their internal and external collaboration practices.  That calls for a changed mind set at all levels .

·        Governments, private and government hospitals , pharma industry , transport,  insurance and other service providers now have to collaborate with each other to bring about greater speed, effectiveness , quality healthcare at affordable cost . That would be the way forward , and probably the best way, to achieve top class customer (patient) care and ensure customer delight. It is not just knowledge but exercises and involvement that are vital.

 

The effectiveness of the program has been validated by the excellent feed back received from the participants.

இப்போது உள்ள கொரோனா - 19  ஊரடங்கு காலகட்டத்தில் தங்கள் பகுதில் உள்ள கருவுற்ற ஏழை கும்பத்தை சார்ந்த தாய்மார்கள் தங்களின் குடும்ப தினசரி மற்றும் நிலையான வருமானம் இல்லாதபோது , அவர்கள் சாப்பாட்டிற்கே வழியில்லாமல் இருப்பதை  தனது கொரோன கணக்கெடுப்பின் பொது அறிந்த இந்த செவிலியர் மற்றும் இவரின் கணவரின் உதவியுடன் தங்களினால் முடிந்தவரை சில குடும்பங்களுக்கு உதவலாம் என முடிவு செய்து அத்தியாவசிய தேவைகளான அரிசி, மளிகை பொருட்கள் மற்றும் காய்கறிகள் வழங்கினார், அத்துடன் கர்ப்பிணிகள் இந்தக் காலத்தில் எடுத்துக் கொள்ள வேண்டிய முன்னெச்சரிக்கை நடவடிக்கைகளையும் தேவையான ஆலோசனைகளையும் அவர்களுக்கு வழங்கினார்கள். கொள்ளுமேடு, வெள்ளானுர் மற்றும் கன்னியம்மன் நகர் கிராம் மக்களுக்கு இந்த உதவிகள் அவர்களின் வீடுகளுக்கே நேரடியாக வழங்கினார்.

HEALTHCARE - THE NEED TO REGULATE AND ENHANCE

While the state and central budgets for health care spending have increased over the years, they remain low by global standards, not only in comparison with the advanced west but countries from the third world.

Health care is a primary responsibility of the state, especially in a poor nation like India and spending on it certainly needs to be increased in comparison to other sectors.  While life expectancy is 66 years in India, it is 74 in Brazil, 75 in China, 59 in South Africa and 79 in the US. Increasing healthcare spending particularly by the government and more importantly reaching healthcare facilities to all, needs to be ensured.

While safety index in childbirth has shown a healthy progress, in relation to other countries, India has a long way to go in child mortality. While the national figures depicting various facets of health care seem encouraging there is huge disparity in healthcare advancement and dispensing between the advanced and backward states and this is something that needs to be looked into.

There is also lopsided growth in health care between villages,towns and big cities in the same State.Studies also point out that there are lacuna in some areas of health care even in States which are supposedly advanced in health care dispensing, for (eg) Although Tamilnadu is considered a progressive state in healthcare, states like Punjab, Kerala and Haryana are more progressive in some parameters. It is a matter of grave concern that awareness on Immunization and health and hygiene of pregnant and breast-feeding mothers have not reached a large section of the population.

Life-style diseases, hereditary diseases, accident injuries  are areas registering a steady increase, leading to higher personal spending on health and hygiene. This is a critical area needing special attention,While some state governments have health insurance schemes in place,which enable people below the poverty lineto access expensive medical care. It should be borne in mind that expanding insurance services and Medical cover will lead to pushing up of costs and excess diagnosis and treatment in private hospitals and therefore like in other markets, creation of a strong regulatory body under the new health policy  is a necessity.

It is a welcome trend that traditional treatment methods like ayurveda, siddha, unani and yoga are increasingly being sought after by the common man. They are also being dispensed alongside allopathic treatment in government institutions. It is essential to expand the scope of these unconventional,low cost treatment modalities which do not have adverse side effects.

There is also a need to have a strong regulatory body to monitor and avoid malpractices in private sector hospitals. This will ensure quality healthcare at reasonable cost are available to people.

SN celebrates its knowledge dissemination efforts in the graceful presence of a venerable Guru!

Sankara Nethralaya’s annual celebration of knowledge sharing as enshrined in its tenets and acknowledging its achievers was celebrated with panache as the “31^st Graduation ceremony of the Medical Research Foundation’ on the 2^nd of November 2019. The event assumed great significance as it marked the graduation of the last batch of students belonging to the Elite School of Optometry – BITS, Pilani academic collaboration and the fact that it was being held under the Aegis of a most respected guru, friend, guide, philosopher, generous supporter and the 1^st Principal of the Elite School of Optometry, (ESO) Dr P P. Santanam, a man whose impeccable character, sterling virtues and lofty ideals made him the most ideal example to emulate,  in the eyes of Dr SS.Badrinath and being chosen by him to lead the fledgling institution as a ‘Role model for the students’.  A man who continues to be ‘a shining role model’ to this day not only for the students of the pioneering institution he served as the first Principal, but to every staff member, consultant, scientist and researcher at Sankara Nethralaya.

It was a sight to behold as the graduating students walked up in their dream attire, the convocation gown, to receive their certificates from the chief guest and other peers similarly clad in their colourful attire, to the thunderous applause of the audience including their proud parents. The pledge and oath that followed reminded one of a new regiment of trained and spirited warriors leaving the fort to the battle field.

There was an air of confidence and pride in the voice of the institution’s head of academics, Dr Meenakshi Swaminathan and there was good reason for the same, the institution’s sterling achievements in ‘knowledge acquisition and dissemination’ one of its founding principles, came out loud and clear as she read out the ‘Academic Report’ filled with accomplishments of its stalwarts being conferred with Diplomates, Fellowships, Awards and other honours from the most prestigious seats of learning and professional bodies in India and abroad including the AAO. Royal College of Surgeons, Glasgow, Anglia Ruskin University, American Society of Retina specialists, IJO and the World’s No-1 healthcare agency the WHO, for the impact of their research findings and contributions to overall eyecare. This was matched by the impressive number of PhD’s won, papers published in peer reviewed journals by the students of the various educational institutions of the Medical Research Foundation. The most heartening aspect of the massive knowledge acquisition being showcased was its emphasis on the common good and translation into knowledge sharing through a list of major CME’s and meets and demonstrable impact on public health and pain alleviation through measures like a directive on optimal classroom illumination and ergonomics, specialized eye testing for drivers, vision evaluation charts in local languages that a lay man can make use of on his own, inputs on niche visual needs of sportsmen etc.

The most awaited Chief Guest’s address by the highly adored and respected Dr P P Santanam, a man captured in his shining avatars as an innovator, humanitarian, inspiring teacher, dedicated member of the SN family, generous contributor to research and academics, evolved soul, academician and a man who gave back all that he had to his institution, by Dr Rizwana, Assistant Professor, ESO and Head – Binocular Vision, held the audience in rapt attention, a speech which in his characteristic style was simple yet providing a lot of food for thought and sage counsel. The pioneer and leader in occupational optometry traced the origin and growth of the institution which was dearer to him than his home and the role of all those who contributed to its growth including its prime architect and visionary Dr SS.Badrinath.

The loving and caring academician had a word of advice to the large number of students gathered to keep their grey cells superior to gadgets by constantly exercising it and to practice their vocation/profession with ethics, compassion and commitment, which will eventually pave the way for rich rewards, instead of chasing short term and unethical gains. He closed his most absorbing talk with best wishes to the graduating students and a thoughtful observation that ‘Learning is a journey, not a destination’!!
